Welcome to Deep Water Learning!

Hi, I’m Aramide, and I’m a (Nigerian) PhD student in Water Resources Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Previously, I did a BSc in geophysics at Texas A&M University, College Station and an MSc, also in geophysics, at the University of Paris, France. The title of this blog comes from deep learning, a subfield of machine learning that is inspired by the learning structure of the brain.

I created Deep Water Learning out of a sense of urgency to discuss the issues of water stress, energy and environmental sustainability – especially given climate change.

Deep Water Learning approaches these problems and their solutions from an African point-of-view. And I went with this theme because I believe we need more platforms to discuss the unique social ecology of Africans around the world.

More broadly, this blog is dedicated to exploring how (seemingly) unrelated disciplines interact with one another. In our case, that means figuring out what machine learning, mythology and even English literature would have to say about sustainability. In this space, I try to expand our understanding of these cool topics while also looking for moments of wonder in random places.
